Hayden

Hayden is a gorgeous plush-coated black and red German Shepherd.  His beautiful reddish coat is very popular in West Germany.  He is 12 months old, and as sweet and handsome as could be.  He is a very loving and affectionate dog.  He is extremely appreciative of everything he receives -- especially love and compassion.

Hayden came from a breeder, who turned in two of his dogs to an animal shelter because he no longer had any use for them.  Hayden had been kept in a cramped kennel, which caused his legs to become sore and weak, and he lost all muscle tone.  When he could no longer perform "stud" duties, he was dumped at the shelter.  The other dog that the breeder dumped was a female that we named Angel.  The reason given for her being turned in was that she was "not having puppies".  Apparently, she was not cranking out enough profit-making puppies for this breeder's demands.  We rescued both of these dogs, and the female was lucky enough to find a wonderful new home almost right away.

When we first met him at the shelter, Hayden was very sad and withdrawn.  He was extremely depressed and would cower when you reached to pet his head -- a sure sign of being physically abused.  The best day of his life was when our volunteers rescued him from the shelter.  They showered him with lots of hugs and attention.  You could see his demeanor brighten up as the day went along, as he realized that he was among friends now.

We noticed immediately that Hayden had a tough time walking.  He was so weak in his rear legs that he couldn't get into a car, and had to be lifted in and out.  We could see that he was in pain when he walked, and that his left hind leg splayed outwards.  His muscles had atrophied from living in a kennel with no exercise.  What a horrible existence that must have been for the first 12 months of his life!

We took Hayden to a bone specialist and received the sad news -- double hip dysplasia!!!  For him to lead a normal life, he would need extensive surgery.  Without it, he will be in constant pain.

This magnificent boy needs our help, but the timing couldn't have been worse.  As you can see from our website, we have several extreme medical cases right now that have wiped out our resources.  The cost of Hayden's surgery will be upwards of $4,000, an amount that is so out of reach that we will have to wait until the money is raised before Hayden can even begin his long road to recovery.  He is such a sweet, playful, lovable boy that it is heartbreaking to see this happen to him.  We know that there are many dogs who are asking for financial help to pay for medical care, but please consider making a small donation towards Hayden.  Click here for more information, and be sure to specify where you would like your donation to be applied!
