Owner Turn-in Application

If you are the owner of a purebred German Shepherd Dog that you can no longer keep, and wish to be put on our owner turn-in waiting list, please read the following very carefully and then complete the application below. Submission of an application is not a guarantee that the dog will be accepted onto the waiting list.

Our no-kill rescue facility is always full, and our owner turn-in waiting list is long. It can be several weeks or months before we can clear a space to bring your dog into our organization. In some lucky cases, we may already have someone looking for a dog that would be a perfect match. We do our best to help as many dogs as we can, but we receive far more requests for help than we can accommodate. Our rescue facility only houses around 25 dogs at a time, and we are always overloaded. Please do what you can to keep your dog safe until we can bring him or her into the rescue. We need your help!

The German Shepherd Rescue is a non-profit group run by volunteers and entirely funded by donations. Although we don't charge a fee for rehoming your dog, any contribution you can make will help us to pay the costs of caring for your dog and looking for a new home for him or her. We have no paid help at the rescue, and we do not receive government funding. We need your help to keep the rescue going so that we can continue to provide food, shelter, medical care, and attention to the dogs at the rescue while they are waiting to find a new family.

If your dog is accepted onto our owner turn-in waiting list, you will be given a date on which to bring the dog into our rescue facility in Burbank, or one of the boarding kennels that we use in Orange County. At that time, the dog MUST be spayed/neutered, and up-to-date on vaccinations. We will need all of the dog's paperwork, including AKC registration (if any), certificate of sterility, shot records, etc. If you can write up a bio on the dog, it will help us to find him or her the right home.

In the meantime, you can try to find your dog a new home on your own. We have some information here. Please be sure to have your dog spayed/neutered and brought up-to-date on vaccinations BEFORE you place him or her into a new home. We also recommend that you ask for an adoption fee. Please do not place a "free to good home" ad, as there are unscrupulous characters who will "con" people out of free dogs only to try to make a profit by selling them to laboratory research or dog fighting rings. Please don't let that happen to your pet.

If your dog is a mixed breed Shepherd, you need to contact dog rescue groups who take in mixes. Please go to www.petfinder.com and look under 'Shelters and Rescue Groups' to locate rescue groups who might be able to help your dog. Please understand that most groups (like ours) are already overloaded with unwanted pets, and they may not be able to help.
